As we paddle toward the end of the year, it can be tempting to simply go with the flow.
But with Black Friday sales and Christmas promotions flooding our inboxes, there is also a surge in fraudulent emails designed to trick you into revealing personal information or compromising your device.
The SCEA ICT Team has been keeping a close eye on fraudulent and suspicious emails appearing across staff inboxes.
Our resident “phisherman” Mr Long Nguyen (Applications Specialist – SCEA), encourages SCEA staff to remain vigilant, especially as we head into the holiday season.
“As always, be vigilant with your emails and only respond to messages from people you know and trust,” says Mr Nguyen this week
“Scam emails can also appear to come from ‘friends’ or ‘colleagues’ if their accounts have been hacked or impersonated, so always double-check before responding.”
To help keep your information secure over the holidays, here are a few important reminders:

Scammers send SMS messages claiming your package is delayed or needs verification.
Legitimate companies won’t request sensitive information through random links—always check through the official app or website.

MFA blocks unauthorised access even if someone knows your password.
Never approve an MFA prompt unless you initiated the sign-in.

Install software updates on your laptop, tablet, or phone to close security gaps and protect against new threats.
Keeping your device updated is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay protected.

When travelling, you may encounter “free Wi-Fi” networks in airports, cafés, and hotels.
These networks can be unsafe and make it easier for others to intercept your activity.
If you need to get online, avoid accessing email, banking, or sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi.
By staying alert and following the tips above, you play an important role in keeping our digital community safe.
