SHCC Ball celebrates Year 12’s as new Performing Arts Centre gets the green light from the City of Armadale

Principal Mr Brett Costin began his tenure at Southern Hills Christian College (SHCC) at the beginning of Term 2 this year. He recently celebrated on multiple fronts with Development Approval (DA) from the City of Armadale for a new Performing Arts Centre on the grounds of the College, and a swinging Year 12 Ball to celebrate his first cohort of Year 12 graduates.

I am sure that we have all read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary masterpiece, ‘The Great Gatsby’, (or watched the Leonardo DiCaprio film of the same name), with SHCC taking the glitz and glamour of the 1920’s ‘Jazz Age’ to another level for their School Ball at the Burswood on Swan venue in the shadows of Optus Stadium.

Year 11 and 12 students arrived stylishly for ‘Gatsby Glam’, wearing sequins and sharp suits, enjoying one of the most anticipated events of the school calendar.

Adding to the excitement of the season, SHCC also received news that the City of Armadale has now given the ‘green light’ for the construction of the Performing Arts Centre.

After ten months of deliberation, the approval marks a significant milestone for Southern Hills — the first major capital project since the gymnasium was built in 2008 under the Building Education Revolution program (BER Funding).

The new facility will provide a purpose-built home for creativity and performance, supporting drama, music, assemblies and community gatherings for years to come.

Principal Mr Brett Costin said the SHCC community is thankful and excited for what lies ahead.

“We’re incredibly thankful to God for His faithfulness in guiding us through this process,” said Mr Costin this week.

“Our students and staff have patiently waited for this next step, and it’s exciting to look forward to seeing construction begin in the second half of next year.”

An architectural firm will be appointed before Christmas, with design work and further approvals scheduled for the first half of 2026.

As the SHCC community reflects on this milestone, the words of Psalm 127:1 come to mind: “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain.”

This verse reminds us that all achievements and foundations are possible through God’s provision and abundant grace.
