SCC’s Fiddler Jr production plays to large crowds across a week of shows

Over four magical nights and two matinees (6-9 May), Swan Christian College’s Fiddler on the Roof Junior, featuring a cast of over 50 Senior School students, transported audiences back in time to 1905 Russia to recreate author Joseph Stein’s classic screenplay.

The stage design, with salvaged trees and a projection of a full moon, effectively recreated the setting and provided a powerful backdrop for this classic story of a man and his family caught between tradition and the winds of change brought on by the Russian Revolution.

The special Friday matinee on 9 May was a highlight of the production week, which welcomed students from across the Swan Christian Education Association. Guests from Ellenbrook Christian College, Beechboro Christian School, Kalamunda Christian School and Mundaring Christian College joined together in the auditorium to enjoy the performance.

It was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the SCC community across the SCEA network and to share the talents of our Senior School performers with a wider audience of peers and fellow Christian schools.

The lead, Prezley (Year 12), and understudy Jeremy (Year 11), confidently led the cast in exploring complex themes of family and tradition. Prezley and Jeremy, who both played Tevye—a respectable Jewish man—delivered compelling monologues with God.

Christians in the audience could relate to his honest wrestle with God as he faced adversity and the emotional turmoil of his daughters choosing their own matches, going against the customs of arranged marriages.

Directed by Ms Jane Hille, with musical direction by Mr Kane Shaw and choreography by Mrs Beth Balla, the cast demonstrated great maturity in delivering these sophisticated themes. SCC’s Fenceline Theatre continues producing amazing performances that intersperse humour with exceptional singing and engaging choreography. Well done, Fenceline team!
