Swan student wins long-distance cycling prize

Congratulations to Year 11 Swan student Nicholas B., a recipient of the Luke Durbridge Sports Scholarship, who won all three events that make up the Peel Junior Tour Under-17 Men’s cycling competition at the Kwinana Motorplex recently.

The day after the competition, Nicholas (Nick) was part of a Men’s team of three riders who won the Peel Six Hour Enduro, which, as the name suggests, is a six-hour endurance relay race. The following weekend, he won the Men’s B-Grade race in the Peel Kermesse Criterium, a 62.4km road cycling race!

Nick was selected to be part of the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) talent identification program in June 2018.

Representatives from WAIS and Track Cycling Western Australia (TCWA) conducted testing at Swan Christian College, and even though he was a year younger than the targeted age groups, he met their criteria and was invited into the program. He has been competing at a State and National level in road and track cycling since 2019.

Nick’s mum expressed her gratitude for the College’s support of Nick’s cycling endeavours through the Luke Durbridge Sports Scholarship.

“[The scholarship provided Nick] with much-appreciated support towards his training, coaching and competing expenses.”

“COVID lockdowns permitting (finger, toes and everything crossed) Nick will be travelling to Brisbane in July to compete in the AusCycling Junior Track National Championships and to Melbourne in September to compete in the AusCycling Junior Road Championships. He is hoping to podium at both events. He is also planning to attend a European Development Camp for racing experience in July 2022.”

“Long term, Nick would love to be part of a National Road Series team and compete regularly at national and international events.”

Well done to Nick on his achievements as he pursues his short-term and long-term cycling competition goals.
