Redefining Risk with SCEA’s Manager of Risk, Governance and Assurance – Mr Paul Fettis

When managed well, risk can be a powerful tool to safeguard our people, our purpose, and the ongoing success of Christian education across our communities.

Mr Paul Fettis has been working closely with leaders across our schools to introduce a new Risk Management Framework.

This initiative is more than a compliance requirement – it’s a thoughtful, strategic approach designed to support teaching, learning, and operational excellence throughout the Association.

“Risk management affects your day-to-day work, whether you’re a classroom teacher, support staff, or a school leader,” said Mr Fettis this week.

“The Risk Framework helps us to proactively identify, assess, and respond to potential challenges – from student safety and wellbeing, to excursions and technology systems.”

Instead of waiting for problems to occur, the Framework promotes a mindset of proactive thinking and practical steps. It’s about being equipped, not frantic – ensuring that when the unexpected happens, we are prepared.

Supporting Our Shared Vision
At SCEA, our vision is to be a flourishing learning community through excellent Christian education that transforms lives for God’s glory. The introduction of the Risk Management Framework supports this vision by strengthening the foundation on which our schools operate – enabling safe, stable, and responsive environments where students and staff can thrive.

By embedding this approach, Paul, the Senior Leadership Team, and the SCEA Board’s Risk, Governance and Assurance Committee are collaboratively strengthening the systems behind the scenes—not to create more red tape, but to foster clarity, consistency, and confidence across our schools.

Looking Ahead
In the coming weeks, we will continue the ‘Let’s Talk Risk!’ series with insights into the Framework and its connection to your role, including a look at Risk Appetite (and no, it’s not about lunch).

Meanwhile, the Risk Management Framework is available on the SCEA Intranet under the Policies section. We encourage you to review it and discuss with your school leadership if you would like to learn more.

As a community, managing risk means stewarding our resources, caring for one another, and building safe, adaptable schools aligned with our shared vision.

Stay tuned for the next instalment – and thank you for being part of the journey!
