This session, Numeracy and Mathematics presented by Dr Thelma Perso, was an engaging and informative workshop which discussed teaching for numeracy and how that differs to teaching simply mathematics. Through Thelma’s own admission, it was a confronting workshop and made us reassess how we currently teach mathematics to students. It was an outstanding presentation and every point raised challenged our thinking. A comment made by an attendee afterwards was that “every teacher needs to hear this”, and this is a truly accurate reflection of the knowledge Thelma shared with us.

The main aspects of this workshop included discussing the difference between Numeracy and Mathematics, the importance of teaching problem-solving well in schools, the widening gap in knowledge and capability within an average senior school Mathematics classroom as well the importance of quality assessment.  Thelma also reinforced that Numeracy is a general capability of the Australian Curriculum and that it should be a priority across the school. Group work, practical examples, guidance and strategies were all part of this intensive seminar.
