Over 250 SCEA students gathered on 13 September to enjoy the gift of music at the 5th annual Choral Fest, this year hosted by Swan Christian College.

The students' excitement was evident as they spent an entertaining and educational day with their sister schools.

Mathilda Joubert, Principal of the SCEA Institute of Teaching and Learning and an avid musician, was the MC for the day.

“Music is a wonderful gift from God,” said Mathilda Joubert, “It builds bridges and brings immense joy.”

After opening with Advance Australia Fair, with a modified Christian second verse, the worship leaders from Swan Christian College led the participants in an energetic worship song.

Each of the junior school choirs took turns in teaching all the participants a new song (some in rounds or parts others with a tricky clapping beat), before performing their chosen item, which ranged from modern praise songs, to traditional spiritual melodies, pop ballads and folk songs. A special guest choir from Kingsway Christian College was invited to join in the event.

Rather than simply being a range of performances, Mathilda ensured that the performances were interspersed with vocal exercises and challenges as well as ample opportunity for the students to mingle and make a new friend.

Two renditions by the extraordinary female barbershop quartet, True Blue, (in which Mathilda is the lead singer) had the students in awe as they experienced the unique sound of four part a capella singing.

As a special surprise, the cast of Kalamunda’s Cinderella Rockerfella treated the participants to a scene from their upcoming Term 4 production, with full costumes and choreography.

Choral Fest orchestrator, Karl Dietrich, said, “This was another great day of sharing the love of singing with fellow students and inspiring each other to keep striving for excellence. “

A huge thank you and well done to the choir students and directors from each school:
