Secondary students at Southern Hills Christian College celebrated National Science Week by participating in “The Big Watermelon Experiment” where they, together with 300 other schools nationwide, tested how many rubber bands are required before a watermelon implodes.

Before the experiment, students made predictions on the outcome of the experiment based on scientific principles.

As you can see from the photos, the students were well-prepared for the eventual outburst with safety equipment and a good dose of courage!

Data from the experiment will be shared on a national scale in order to verify results and promote the study of Science within schools across Australia.
